What Causes Dental Anxiety?
Dental anxiety, also known as dentophobia, is a common condition that keeps many people from getting necessary dental care.
Some of the contributing factors to dental anxiety include:
- Painful or traumatic dental experiences
- Fear of needles or drills
- Feeling helpless or vulnerable
- Fear of the unknown
- Anxiety disorders
- Overactive gag reflex
- Special needs
- Embarrassment about oral health
Our Dental Anxiety Protocol
Our dental team uses a dental anxiety protocol to help patients deal with their fears and feel comfortable in our office.
Some of the key elements of this protocol include the following:
- Open communication — We encourage you to discuss your fears and anxieties with our dental team. That way, we can customize a treatment approach for you.
- Relaxation techniques — We’ll work with you to practice deep breathing or guided imagery to manage your dental anxiety.
- Distraction methods — We offer televisions in your treatment rooms to distract you during your procedure.
- Signal system — When you need a break, you can always raise your hand, and we will happily pause the procedure.
- Pain management — We use a local anesthetic to completely numb the area we’re working on, eliminating pain or discomfort.
- Sedation options — We offer nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” or oral conscious sedation to help you relax. Both are safe and effective.

If dental anxiety has kept you from getting the care you need, sedation dentistry can make your visits more comfortable and stress-free. West Madison Dental offers nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to help patients relax during treatment. While sedation dentistry is safe for most people, it's natural to wonder if it's the right choice for you.
Are There Any Risks with Sedation Dentistry?
Both nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation are widely used and have an excellent safety record. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, allowing you to return to your normal routine after your appointment. Oral conscious sedation is a stronger option, helping you feel deeply relaxed while remaining awake.
While sedation is safe for most patients, it may not be recommended for those with certain medical conditions, such as severe respiratory issues. Our team will carefully evaluate your health to ensure your safety and comfort during treatment.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is typically safe and effective for:
- Patients with dental anxiety or fear
- Those undergoing lengthy or multiple procedures
- People with a strong gag reflex
- Patients who have difficulty sitting still for long periods
- Those with sensitive teeth or trouble getting numb
During your consultation, we'll review your medical history and discuss any medications you're taking to determine if sedation is a good fit for your needs.

Sedation Dentistry Technology

In-Office Moderate Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is a gentle, effective way to help you feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. It’s ideal for those who experience anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, or are undergoing longer procedures.
With this method, we’ll prescribe a pill for you to take a little while before your appointment. By the time you’re in the chair, you’ll feel deeply relaxed but remain awake and able to respond to questions or instructions. Many patients feel so at ease that they remember very little about the procedure afterward.
Oral conscious sedation allows dental care to be more comfortable and stress-free, especially for patients who may have avoided the dentist in the past. It’s safe, effective, and monitored closely throughout your visit to ensure your well-being.
At its heart, oral sedation is about building trust and comfort so you can get the care you need without fear standing in the way of your healthiest smile.

Nitrous Oxide
Do you have dental anxiety that causes you to skip dental appointments and put your oral health at risk? At West Madison Dental, we understand how ingrained these fears can be, but our goal is to know where they come from and how we can help you overcome them.
A kind and gentle team of professionals who empathize with your concerns is the first step. We also offer nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” to help smooth the stressful bumps for you and help you relax.
Nitrous oxide is a slightly sweet-smelling gas that you inhale through a small nasal mask. As you breathe normally, you’ll be flooded with a warm sense of well-being, and you’ll feel very calm and relaxed. With nitrous, you will remain fully conscious and able to communicate with us, but the activity around you will seem distant and far away.
After treatment is completed, we’ll turn off the nitrous oxide and have you breathe pure oxygen for several minutes. You’ll feel refreshed and alert with no drowsy side effects, and you can safely drive yourself home from your appointment.
Please let us know at your next appointment if you think nitrous oxide would benefit you.
